Restoring Startup-config again in router after taking backup

Here in this article, you will learn that how you can take backup of the done configuration in the router and can restore that backup in router again. This practical is real time practical which can be performed in real network scenario. So read this article so carefully so that you can learn whatever I have learned in my CCNA Training in Chandigarh.

So will start with the very simple scenario in which you have to connect one router to a server. You can see this scenario in the given image.

Now switch to the TFTP Server and remove all the file which are already there on this server.

Connect router and server by giving IP Address to both of them. Do all the configuration in a router and save all the settings permanently so that you can take backup of all those settings.

Now you have done with the configurations which are saved in Startup-config which means all the settings are saved permanently in your router. You can check all the settings by running a command Router# show startup-config this command will show you the saved settings in the router. You can see this in the image given below.

Now you can start taking backup of the startup-config. You can see the commands which will help you to take backup in the given image.

After Taking the backup from the router you can see that backup file on the server machine which has been made TFTP Server.

Now you can erase startup-config of the router so that you can restore the settings again from the Server. The commands you can see in below image will remove all the settings from the router and will make it the fresh router.

Now you can see the commands which will help you to get all the settings and configurations back from the server to a router. See all those commands in the below-given image. Remember before you will restore the configuration into the router you need to give IP Addresses again on the router interface so that router can make the connection with the server to fetch the backup file.

Remember you have to take backup of startup-config but you when you will restore it you have to restore it in Running-config and also have to run command Write to save all the settings permanently.

This process will allow you to restore your configuration within no time in the router again. If you also have to update your router there again this process is going to help you a lot.

Note :- To do live practical on a router you can make your computer or laptop a TFTP server by just downloading TFTP from the Internet. You can make your windows and Linux machine as TFTP Server.

How to take backup of Cisco router’s IOS

In this article, we are going to learn that how to take backup of Cisco Router’s IOS and configurations backup. As I am doing CCNA Training in Chandigarh I have learned so many things. This is one of the things I would like to share with you all that how you can take backup of Cisco Routers configurations and of its IOS.

WHY have we to take backup of all these things?

First of all, we should know that what is the reason that we should take backup of Cisco routers. So taking the backup is can be the daily of a frequent task of a network engineer. In which backup of complete IOS of the router gets done. Along with that network engineer also take router’s configuration backups just to ensure he has all the configuration which can be restored afterward. Those all configurations can also be shifted to a new router within no time if we are configuring them. So taking the backup is necessary so that settings can be restored if required.

So how we can take backup. To take backup of the Cisco Routers we need to make a server first is known as TFTP Server. I will show you how you can perform this task in Cisco Packet Tracer. You can download Cisco packet tracer and can install in on your computer in which you can perform any networking task. So here are the steps you can follow to perform this task.

Step 1

Take one Server in packet tracer and put it anywhere in it.

Step 2

Now put one router and make connections in both machines . you can choose any network addresses to connect them.

Step 3

After getting done with connectivity now you can see the TFTP Service in Server.

Step 4

Remove all the IOS File which are already there in TFTP Server. You should remove all these files so that you can see your backup file.

 

Step 5

Now when you are going to take backup of the IOS of the router you need to copy the filename of the IOS file. How to copy it you can see in the image given below.

The command to show name of the IOS is Router# Show flash:

Step 6

After Removing all those files now you can take backup of your Cisco router which will be shown in the servers. You can see the command by which you can take backup of the router.

Router#copy flash: tftp:

Source filename []? pt1000-i-mz.122-28.bin

Step 7

After the pasting name of the file, it will ask for the server address in which you have to take backup of the IOS of Router. Give it the address as given in below image. After putting the address of the server it will ask for the destination file name where you just need to click enter.

Destination filename [pt1000-i-mz.122-28.bin]?

 

Now you can see on the server that your IOS has been backup.
